Get to Know Gwen Ellert

Gwen’s interest in joint and bone health came about from her personal history of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age of 21. Once the disease was under control and with her degree in nursing, she began working with registered nurses in nursing administration and then branching out as a health educator.

It was during this time that Gwen authored two editions of the best-selling The Arthritis Exercise Book and an accompanying video. After completing a masters degree in adult education, Gwen co-authored two editions of The Osteoporosis Book, endorsed by Osteoporosis Canada, with rheumatologist Dr. John Wade and in consultation with Dr. Harold Copp, known for his discovery of calcitonin, a hormone that works to control calcium and potassium levels. More than 35,000 of these books were sold.

Two more editions of The Osteoporosis Book: Bone Health (as it was renamed) followed with pharmacist Alan Low on board as co-author. The latest version is being used by American Bone Health in its Peer Educator Program.

Gwen’s most recent book is Bone Health Basics: Tips for Preventing and Managing Osteoporosis.

In addition to writing books, Gwen co-founded a chapter of the Rheumatology Nurses Society and is in constant demand as a conference and workshop presenter.

“The Osteoporosis Book is a comprehensive reference for this widely underestimated disease, and should be in every home.”
